The first trailer for Kiss of the Spider Woman has arrived, offering a glimpse at Bill Condon’s return to the movie musical – and putting Jennifer Lopez firmly in the spotlight.

Set for release in cinemas on 17th April, the film is based on the Tony Award-winning stage show and stars Diego Luna as Valentín, a political prisoner who shares a cell with Molina (Tonatiuh). To escape the reality of prison life, Molina retells the story of a glamorous Hollywood musical starring his idol, Ingrid Luna – played by Lopez.

The trailer leans into that contrast, shifting between the bleakness of confinement and the fantasy of old-school movie musicals, with Lopez at the centre of the imagined sequences. It’s a role that taps into her star persona, blending performance, spectacle and nostalgia.

For director Bill Condon, it marks a return to familiar territory after Dreamgirls and Beauty and the Beast, though this time with a more contained, character-driven story at its core.

Alongside the musical elements, the film also focuses on the evolving relationship between the two cellmates, with the fantasy sequences acting as both escapism and a way of forging connection.

With a mix of classic musical flair and a more grounded emotional story, Kiss of the Spider Woman looks to bring something slightly different to the genre.
