Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas clash over a hit song in new trailer for Power Ballad
The first trailer for Power Ballad has been released, bringing together Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas in a music-driven comedy-drama from Sing Street director John Carney.
Set for release in UK and Irish cinemas on 29th May, the film follows Rick (Rudd), a once-promising wedding singer whose career has stalled. When he crosses paths with former boyband star Danny (Jonas), the two bond over a shared love of music – but things quickly turn sour when Danny turns one of Rick’s songs into a chart-topping comeback hit.
What begins as an unlikely friendship soon becomes a rivalry, as Rick sets out to reclaim credit for the track he believes is rightfully his, even if it means jeopardising everything else in his life.
The trailer leans into Carney’s familiar mix of humour and heart, with plenty of musical moments alongside a story that digs into ego, ambition and creative ownership. Rudd brings a slightly more desperate edge to his usual charm, while Jonas plays against type as a star trying to hold onto relevance.
The cast also includes Jack Reynor, Havana Rose Liu and Marcella Plunkett, rounding out a story that blends personal stakes with the highs and lows of the music industry.
With Carney back in musical territory, Power Ballad offers a more grounded take on fame and friendship – and what happens when success comes at someone else’s expense.
