Steve Coogan joins Funboys as first look at series two is revealed

The BBC has released first-look images from series two of cult comedy Funboys – and confirmed that Steve Coogan is joining the chaos in a guest role.

Returning to BBC Three, BBC Northern Ireland and iPlayer, the new series catches up with the Ballymacnoose gang as they attempt to navigate adulthood… with predictably questionable results.

After the events of the first series, things initially seem to be on the up. Relationships are blossoming, arguments are (temporarily) under control, and Callum is even trying out a new perm. But it doesn’t take long for things to unravel, with the group diving headfirst into everything from Irish history to robot combat – and making a mess of it along the way.

Coogan will appear as Phillip, a frustrated actor stuck working at a folk museum, whose bitterness begins to blur with the role he’s playing. It’s a character that sounds tailor-made for the actor’s knack for mixing comedy with something a little sharper.

Created by Rian Lennon and Ryan Dylan, the series leans into its offbeat humour and surreal tone, with the second run promising bigger swings as the characters try – and mostly fail – to grow up.

The returning cast includes Ele McKenzie, Lee R James and Ryan Dylan, alongside new additions Nicky Harley, Saorlaoith Brady and Lalor Roddy.

With its mix of absurdity and character-driven comedy, Funboys looks set to build on its cult following when it returns – even if its central trio are no closer to having things figured out.

Series two of Funboys will air on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer, with a release date yet to be announced.
