To celebrate the milestone launch of his debut EP Welcome to Brownsville, Kansas-born singer-songwriter Will Brown unveils the “world of Brownsville” through a four-track live showcase in Covent Garden. It’s a personal journey and an idea first conceived by the former data analyst in 2008, captured in song and now culminating in an intimate debut complete with a full band, including gospel backing singers. Having featured on BBC Radio 2 playlists since 2025, the rising star is ready to welcome listeners into the symbolic Brownsville community that “is not just a place” but “an experience…a town shaped by heartbreak and hope”. It’s an ambitious vision translated into a combination of hopeful pop, soul and gospel, but the singer takes time to emphasise that this is not just about performing music, instead referring to every song as “a conversation…a moment”.

The vision is an immersive experience of stories and joyful escapism that Brown hopes listeners can relate to, and the artist certainly commits to the Brownsville theme visually front-and-centre: there’s a map upon entering the venue, a suitcase later transported off-stage, as well as a newspaper distributed amongst guests with a headline describing an “abandoned house brought back to life”. It’s all very poetic and poignant, and a brief window into the artist’s inspiration. He doesn’t delve too specifically into his stories, but it’s a starting point. Speaking to The Upcoming, the singer shares about how “Brownsville is going to expand tremendously…a whole entire community”. The evening’s performance was designed in the “Golden Lounge” of the map’s Golden Avenue, but Brown tells us there are many more spaces to come.

At Covent Garden’s Middle Eight, Brown performs catchy tracks such as Better Man, a soaring, uplifting piece, followed by latest release Scars and Glory, which features a funky synthline, before concluding with breakout hit gospel Golden, full of triumphant contrasts and old-school soul. It’s a short but charismatic performance with some impressive vocal flurries and no shortage of energy. “It’s been a long time coming,” Brown tells us afterwards. “I’m still pinching myself…but I’m finally able to invite people into the space with me to continue to grow and heal.”
