Sony announces water-resistant smartphone

Sony unveiled their 5” HD display Xperia Z smartphone at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show this week and claimed it offers the highest levels of water-resistance available on the market.

Sony release a water-friendly handset that can be under water for up to 30 minutes.

Sony claims that the phone can be submerged into a pool of water one metre deep for a period of 30 minutes, making it the antidote to anxiety caused by spilt drinks and using your phone by the pool. As well as reaching the waterproof specifications, it also boasts the credentials against dust accumulation.

Sony Mobile executive Steve Walker told the BBC: “If you want to sit in the bath and watch an HD movie this is the device for you.”

The headphone socket, as well as various other ports, comes with little plastic protective caps to keep water out.

The company also promotes the new device’s proprietary Exmor RS image sensor technology, which allows users to record High Dynamic Range (HDR) video.

Sony’s Chief executive Kaz Hirai, who referred to the device as “the superphone”, said: “This intelligent display tech has the sharpest and brightest HD screen…ever brought to a smartphone.”

Boasting the highest resolution imaging and quad core processing, making it perfect for film, music, gaming and one-touch sharing, this new release could rival the two largest contenders in the market: Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy.

The new water-resistant smartphone is set to make a splash when it goes on sale in March.
