Bespoke, handmade dresses by Alexandra King

Here at The Upcoming, we are all for new designers and independent businesses. When we stumbled upon Alexandra King dresses, we just knew there was something special about them.

Alexandra King and friend Anna Vickery set up this company from their studio in Somerset and design, sew and cut every dress themselves. Their ethic is what gives this company its charm – it’s very much a breath of fresh air to know that you are buying a dress which is completely handmade to your taste.

As we are now spoilt for choice when it comes to online shopping, the very idea of clicking the “buy now” button alongside an image of a dress we long for becomes second nature, and we think no more of it. But when a site allows you to buy your coveted dress knowing that the moment you click the button, the people at the other end are designing away, getting patterns cut out and are actually hand-making your garment makes it all the more exciting.

Alexandra King offer a range of bespoke bridal and ready-to-wear dresses that are all handmade. They have also expanded into tops, skirts, coats, accessories and even children’s wear. Alexandra King 1

One of our favourite picks is this Sarah Jane black ballet lace dress. With a sweeping neckline and tight fit bodice, this dress oozes retro glamour. Underneath there is ballet pink taffeta that has been carefully overlaid with a heavy black floral lace that sets the dress aside from the rest. Alexandra King 2

Another piece to keep your eye on is this Lucy Leopard print mini dress. This dress is fitted through the bodice with a slight stretch in its full skirt, giving it the perfect silhouette. Animal print is always on trend and never really dates, so this would be a great staple wardrobe piece.

With their extensive choices, Alexandra King would be the perfect choice if you are on the lookout for a retro, or vintage-inspired dress that you know will be made to the highest quality and by hand.
