Things in Hampstead just got a bit cooler…

The bright lights of Dach & Sons stand out, bringing some chic, funky, NYC style dining and secret lofty cocktail bars amid Hampstead. 

This is the first restaurant from mixologists (and proprietors of Purl and the Worship Street Whistling Shop) Fluid Movement. Here we have a restaurant with that ‘big apple’ feel; the decor is faultless with subway tiles and plenty of neon signs and posters that echo a New York underground vibe.

Tapping into the current street food trend, think American style hot dogs, Dachshund frankfurters, sliders, brisket beef chilli, bourbon baked beans, and bone marrow popcorn all washed down with mint juleps (try the vanilla/cherry), craft beers and whiskeys. Don’t expect plates, but sharing is the motto and it all adds to the experience.

It’s hard not to want to order everything on the menu: the bangers, pork shoulder sausage with an earthy mushroom ketchup, and mini sliders with a range of fillings using Flour Station buns; it’s a meat feast.  What do you expect with a full-time butcher on site? They prepare their own locally sourced sausages and burgers and from one bite it’s easy enough to tell the quality is there. 

Propped up with sides served in popcorn boxes, canisters, and a mini fryer for the fries, the creativity of the presentation follows through to the depth of flavours and execution of the menu.

The Salt Beef Chilli packs a flavoursome punch, the fries crisp to the core with beef dripping, the savoury bone marrow popcorn, although quite a large amount, adds something exciting to the meal. All this for an average price of £15 for a main and two sides; you can’t go wrong. 

And we hear future plans to get bourbon and liquorice-laced milkshakes on the menu, which I would definitely go back to try.

This growing hip place will go down well with the locals of Hampstead; no reservations, so expect long queues, but well worth the wait.

If that isn’t enough, an invitation for heady cocktails shouldn’t go amiss. The speakeasy Purl bar is located upstairs through a residential “secret” stairway, escorted by a member of staff.  The decor is dark, prohibited, and gives it an intimate flair with velvety blue drapes and drones of period jazz melodies filling the room. Purl’s signature cocktails include Mr Hyde’s smoked cocktail with homemade kola, bitters laced in potion bottles and the seasoned Margarita rimmed with vanilla salt, served with Talisker whisky and blue cheese.
