Design Museum to explore the making of LAIKA’s Wildwood in new autumn exhibition

The handcrafted world of LAIKA is coming to London this autumn, with a new Design Museum exhibition offering a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the studio’s latest stop-motion film, Wildwood.

Opening on 15^th October, LAIKA presents Wildwood: The Exhibition will bring together original props, costumes and filmmaking tools used to create the film, alongside work by its visual artists, model makers and scenic painters. Interactive installations will also reveal how the studio builds its elaborate worlds for the screen.

LAIKA, the animation studio behind Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, will release Wildwood in UK and Irish cinemas just over a week after the exhibition opens. The film follows a girl who ventures into a hidden forest in an attempt to rescue her brother.

The exhibition gives visitors the chance to see the craft behind that adventure before – or after – encountering the finished world on the big screen. An accompanying Wildwood book will also be available.

The Design Museum is extending the exhibition beyond its displays with a programme exploring stop-motion animation. Events include a clay animation workshop for children on 27^th October, a Halloween curator tour on 31^st October and an adult stop-motion workshop on 14^th November.

For fans who have wondered how LAIKA turns physical models and miniature environments into its distinctive animated worlds, the exhibition offers a closer look at the objects and techniques normally hidden behind the camera.
