Rebecca Onyett: Capturing nature in beautiful jewellery

Inspired by British wildlife and capturing the ideas of birth, death and evolution we delve into the wild world of Rebecca Onyett, the London-based jewellery designer who fuses fashion with nature.

Born in the countryside, Rebecca’s love and fascination for wildlife grew from an early age. Her jewellery is based upon everything you’d find while journeying through the English countryside from spiders, ants and beetles to moss, leaves and fungus. Not the usual idea behind a jewellery collection, Rebecca’s designs highlight the intricate and original beauty that nature has to offer and cements it as pieces of art for people to wear forever.

As a self-taught taxidermist, Rebecca is “interested in the stories of how things age, how they decay or are preserved” describing taxidermy as a way to “preserve life by celebrating death”. Her creations not only look amazing but also capture an eternal essence of life.

Her latest collection is named Ms Midas, influenced by Carol Ann Duffy’s Poem Mrs Midas and the designs comprise of extravagant embellished gold pieces. Purple, deep red and cobalt blue jewels are placed on gold covered items to create rings, cuffs and brooches. Inspired by the quote “His kiss could turn my lips into a work of art” the collection depicts romanticism and Rebecca believes that “the jewellery from our lovers covers over us, becoming a part of us, protecting us and marking us with ownership and love”.
