Loughran Gallery ArtTing at Boxpark London

Loughran Gallery ArtTing at Boxpark London | Exhibition review

ArtTing is a contemporary summer art event put on by the Loughran Gallery at Shoreditch Boxpark. It is popping up for a single week only so there isn’t much time to view the limited edition works on display. Exhibits come from a variety of notable artists including Dave White, Tracey Emin and Kara Bieber, and all sell at under £1,500.

David White’s pieces stand out as particularly brilliant: obviously honed skills meet a splattered and wild style that is unrestrained, but at the same time very precise. A good look at a piece like Tiger reveals that, as brisk and erratic as the strokes appear on the surface, there is detail and a level of precision in the paintings that simply cannot be achieved without deliberate forethought. The contrast makes his artwork very exciting. Unfortunately, if you want to buy any of it, it has already sold out.

Kara Bieber is a new addition to the Loughran Gallery, but you can instantly appreciate her works. Her pop art-style collages are lively and full of interesting details. Created from a mixture of magazine cut-outs and her own photography, there is an element of humour and strangeness to her work that grabs the attention.

Tracey Emin proves to be the weak link of the exhibition. In among the interesting and varied displays are several nondescript scrawls one might generously call minimalist. They are, in reality, flatly disenchanting doodles that flaunt an uninspiring lack of effort.

The space is small but worth a look, and despite the cramped conditions the show is full of colour running through the many vibrant pieces on display. There’s a decent degree of variety between the exhibits, to boot. If you’ve got a lunchtime going spare then you’ve got enough time to visit. There are some quality content on the walls that are definitely worth a look.

ArtTing is at Boxpark London from 27th August to 3rd September 2013. For further information visit the gallery’s website.
