London’s best Fish and Chips shops

London’s best Fish and Chips shops

When you think of British cuisine, fish and chips should immediately come to mind. The dish has been a staple in the United Kingdom since the late 19th century, when trawl fishing was at its most active in the North Sea. Today, nearly two hundred years later, its popularity is as strong as ever. In the recent national Fish and Chips awards, Spitalfields native Poppies took top spot, however while paying respect to the awards, we decided to form our own list of the best chippys in London.

Poppies
Though this list may be in no particular order, it seems only fair to put newly crowned Poppies first. The East London restaurant features a standard fish supper as well as an extensive seafood menu complete with jellied eels on the starters and fish cakes for mains. The place itself is reminiscent sofa 1950s diner, with your dinner being served by dolled-up waitresses and old school tunes on the jukebox, you’re guaranteed to have a good time and get a great fish fix.

Toff’s
If you need to satiate your conscience as well as your hunger, Toff’s is the spot for you. Established in 1968, the North London stalwart has been serving sustainable fish for as long as anyone can remember. With options like salmon, sea bass and trout on the menu, there is almost certainly something for everyone.

Kerbisher & Malt
At face value, K&M seems to be on board with the recent revival of British cuisine, as its tiled, trendy interior is a far cry from the greasy chippy’s of yonder years. Expect the usual sustainably sourced fishy fare, as well as fish cake and fish fillet burger options. Their chips deserve a special mention, as do their homemade sauces, they also have a great kids (or peckish adults’) menu. 164 Shepherds Bush Road, London W6 7PB

The Golden Hind
This year sees The Golden Hind serve up its 100th year of fish and chip dinners, quite impressive in a city like London where the food scene can be rather fickle. If you want nostalgia and a taste of old world Britain along with your fried cod and mushy peas, look no further than The Golden Hind. The menu is simple and classic, with all of the no-frills chippy favourites being cooked to perfection.

The Fish House
Conveniently situated near Notting Hill Gate station, it doesn’t take long for a crowd to assemble in the takeaway front of The Fish House. Serving sustainable fish and cooking it well is the winning recipe for these newcomers. Upstairs is a large dining area complete with charming staff. The fish is excellent, but the mushy peas and curry sauce are particular standouts. Whether you’re sitting in or running home with your catch, you won’t be disappointed.
