Five conversation tips for shy people

Five conversation tips for shy people

It’s very common for people to feel shy, if you do there’s something you shouldn’t forget: the people are you meeting don’t know you’re shy. Although it may seem obvious, once you realise it it will change you approach giving you a completely fresh start. That notion by itself might not be sufficient, so we came up with five game-changing tips to help you keep the conversation flowing:

Picture yourself as an outgoing person

Envisioning yourself as an outgoing person who has no issues mingling with new people and whom everyone likes to talk to will make a huge difference. Even though it might sound funny, repeating self affirming statements can help in surprising ways. Try with “I always know what to say. I am comfortable in social situations. People love to talk with me, and I love to meet new people.” Acting with confidence will make you feel confident.

Be the guy

There’s no need to wait for someone to say hello and invite you into a conversation when you can do it first. Be the guy and start the conversation, that way you’ll have complete control over it. A good approach is offering a honest compliment to someone. You can make a comment on something they are wearing and then move on with a related question. Alternative just go with a classic “what do you like to do just for fun?”.

Smile

Body language makes a huge difference and the most effective signal you can give is a confident smile. A conversation may just take a much more fun course if you get started with a sincere smile, it will show interest as well as a willingness to listen.

No pressure

There’s no need to take unnecessary pressure on yourself. Bear in mind that you shouldn’t start a conversation with the aim of unnaturally impressing or entertaining the person you are talking with. Simply show your genuine interest in others. If you focus your attention on someone else, you will make that person feel important. Making someone feel relaxed and comfortable will have the same effect on you

Make them feel important

Another key tip is making feel the other personal important. If you are not sure what to say, move the focus away from yourself. Friends are supportive and the first step in making friends is showing your thoughtfulness. Ask them how was their day and express your care in what they say.
