Opened in September on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton, Fancy Funkin Chicken combines the elements of a casual chicken shop with sleek interiors and the drinks menu of a stylish cocktail bar. It’s cosy and dimly lit, with red neon lights casting a warming glow across the high tables where guests can enjoy a range of small bites and larger plates, along with a range of craft beers and cocktails.

Fancy Funkin Chicken uses meat from ethically raised birds, covered in a spice recipe from the southern states. The boneless chicken bites are substantial, and perfectly crispy, and the sauce they arrive with is the perfect tangy accompaniment.

Other menu items to look forward to include the Totally Tropical Burger, served with smoked chilli mayo and pineapple, the Funkin Hot Burger, with pickled jalapenos, and the enticingly named I Can’t Feel My Funkin Face Hot Wings, which rather dauntingly requires a disclaimer to be signed before ordering, according to the menu.

And to enjoy alongside these succulent chicken bites and hearty burgers are the craft beers and cocktails, which include locally sourced ingredients such as fruit from the nearby Brixton Market. If all the cocktails are as good as the Hibiscus and Blackcurrant Julep, with hibiscus and blackcurrant syrup, Bourbon, mint and a dash of lime, diners will want to stay long after polishing off their chicken wings.

And to accommodate for the late night crowds of Brixton, the Fancy Funkin Chicken will host DJs from Thursday to Sunday, playing an “eclectic and upbeat music programme of Jazz and Fun”. Perfect for those who come for the chicken and stay for the cocktails,
