Could The Last Knight be the biggest Transformers movie so far?

Could The Last Knight be the biggest Transformers movie so far?

Michael Bay’s Transformers movies aren’t renowned for their sense of subtlety, and with a cinema schedule packed with big-hitters like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it looks like Transformers: The Last Knight could be the most explosive outing yet. With an all-star cast featuring the likes of Mark Wahlberg and Hollywood icon Antony Hopkins, it’s hoped that the movie will once again overcome the critical misgivings to give Paramount Pictures yet another massive hit when it’s released on 22nd June.

So far we’ve seen a typically bombastic trailer that uses plenty of slow motion explosions and ponderous monologues to build up the drama. And whilst it’s not immediately clear whether the action takes place in the past, the present or the future, it looks to continue Michael Bay’s flamboyant movie-making credentials. Whilst the plotlines of the Transformers movies have had the tendency to be obscured by the on-screen action, the film will follow on from 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction and see the devastating consequences of a war between the human race and the Transformers. Transformers: Age of Extinction was a global hit that earned a staggering $1.1 billion at the box office, despite frequent critical suggestions that it was a triumph of style over substance.

Regardless of such snipings, the Transformers franchise has become a real money-spinner for Hasbro, as the creators have enjoyed the immense marketing potential for everything from the endless plastic figures to the Transformers-themed games. What could mark out Transformers: The Last Knight out from the rest is the fact that it will be Michael Bay’s last movie for the franchise. And so we can expect that he’ll use this event to create some pretty iconic moments with the destruction of a fake Stonehenge being amongst the more amusing cinematic prospects.

And regardless of what happens after Michael Bay exits the franchise, we can look forward to plenty more Transformers action in the future. This is because there are plans for no less than fourteen more Transformers movies, it looks like we’ll be seeing many more Deceptacons and Autobots on our screens soon.
