How technology has changed the way we consume online gaming

The world of technology moves incredibly quickly, changing all facets of our modern day life. This is affecting the processes by which we do a lot of things, including how we consume a variety of different media. Online gaming has really changed in recent years, which is what we’ll be discussing in this article.

The growth of online gaming

Online gaming has been growing steadily over the last few decades. This has come from the early days of Flash animation all the way to the much more complex games that we see today. As technology has pushed forward, the games that can be played over an internet connection has become much wider. Faster connections and improved hardware have changed what we think is possible over the internet.

In the early days, these games could only be very simplistic, as the assets had to be sent over slower internet connections. For some, this meant long loading times as they waited for the assets to be available. If a game was being used heavily across a lot of devices, then it would lag or even go down entirely.

With better internet connections came online MMORPGs, which allowed user interaction between players. This was another massive step forward, as it allowed for the possibility of interactive worlds to be created. This came in the form of games like Neverwinter Nights, which was one of the first to offer this form of online play.

Going mobile

Nowadays, the phones that we keep in our pockets are just as powerful, if not more powerful, than the computers of decades ago. This is a major driver in the quest for more mobile app development, as these devices are ready to handle increased demand.

The way that we play these games has also changed, as we’re much more likely to expect to play them for free. This model of pricing is common on mobile games, in which the initial game is free but there are premium features to pay for. These games have attracted some controversy over the years, but they still seem to be popular with players. The range of games is impressive, from snowboarding-themed Alto’s Adventure to console-quality Shadowgun Legends.

This is the state of how we consume these games at the moment, but this will all change as we move forward in time. The accelerated rate of progress will continue to shift how we play games online.
