Today in Singapore the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy have announced their coveted list of the best places to dine at around the globe. After a series of new changes – the introduction of a more diverse, gender-balanced judging panel and a hall of fame for past winners who cannot compete anymore with the same business – the rankings saw a few surprises, particularly in the top ten.

With Osteria Francescana and El Celler de Can Roca out of the competition, former world number three Mirazur has been crowned the World’s Best Restaurant 2019. Mauro Colagreco’s restaurant, which is located in Menton but sits just 30 metres from the Italian border, mixes the chef’s Argentinian heritage with the cooking styles – as well as the produce – from the two neighbouring countries.

Noma, a former winner but now considered a new player because of their relocation, entered the list at number two (Highest New Entry). Basque barbecue sensation Asador Etxebarri climbed to the third position, whereas Bangkok Indian restaurant Gaggan and Geranium from Denmark completed the top five. Denmark is now the only country with two spots at the very top.

Central (number six, Peru), Mugaritz (number seven, Spain), Arpége (number eight, France), Disfrutar (number nine, Spain) and Maido (number ten, Peru) confirmed that Europe is still the most competitive continent for food.

Azurmendi (Spain) won the Highest Climber Award, rising 29 places to the number 14. Alain Passard of Arpège in Paris was voted by his peers as the winner of the Chefs’ Choice Award.

Finally, Den (Japan) was given the Art of Hospitality prize and Andrea Caminadas’s Schloss Schauenstein the Sustainable Restaurant Award.

Ahead of the ceremony a number of major accolades had already been announced: Daniela Soto-Innes is the World’s Best Female Chef; José Andrés the Icon Award recipient; Lido 84 the One to Watch restaurant; Jessica Préalpato the World’s Best Pastry Chef; and young Canadian cook Andersen Lee collected the 50 Best BBVA Scholarship.

We’ve put all the 50 restaurants – and also the Best of the Best that are still open – on a map, which you can see here.
