Famous bands that formed in high school or college
Many great groups you listen to today were formed in high school or college, from the Beatles to Green Day. If you are thinking about creating your own group, learn how some of the world’s favourite groups started out.
Top popular music bands that started in college
Besides giving you different challenges, pressing you with deadlines and piles of writing assignments, college can also provide many opportunities for realising talent, from sports prowess to musical flare. Sometimes the right combination of people, ambition and skill can lead to international popularity and fame. Many bands start in college playing in a member’s garage in the evenings, but only some of them conquer the big scene. We went through the origin stories of some famous music groups and created a list of those who started when they were just students.
Famous groups born in the college
When you are finally done with your studies or have received assignment writing help, you have time for yourself and your hobbies. How many times have you thought about becoming a musician but was afraid that no one would treat you seriously? These guys took the first step and succeeded:
- R.E.M. This American band started back in 1980 when the lead singer Michael Stipe and the guitarist Peter Buck recruited a bunch of students at the University of Georgia, finding a bass guitarist, percussionist and drummer. Starting as a band playing at birthday parties, they dropped out of college and recorded their first album.
- Radiohead. Another famous group was formed in the 1990s, in the era of rock, when four boys attended an all-boys school in England, Oxfordshire. Their first name was On a Friday and they got together at weekends and holidays to play music. During one performance in a tavern, they were spotted by their current manager, and he agreed to produce their first demo.
- Pink Floyd. This iconic rock band was created in the 1960s and expressed the philosophical mood of those times, which is still relevant today. Nick Mason and Roger Waters studied architecture at one of the London colleges. They started playing with a few other students and after several drop-outs finally formed the group that conquered the whole world.
- Coldplay. This British band was first set up when two students met during orientation week at a London university. They renamed their group a few times until they became Coldplay, one of the unique voices in today`s rock music scene.
- Queen. The successful career of this band started when three guys formed a group, Smile, and then welcomed a new member, Farrokh Bulsara, who became famous under the name Freddy Mercury. The group is known for such eternal songs as The Show Must Go On, Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are the Champions;
- Green Day. Imagine young 14-year-old Billie Joe Armstrong playing in a school band called Sweet Children. Within three years, the trio became known as Green Day and formed a new iconic group loved by thousands of teenagers worldwide.
- The Beatles. John Lennon (17 years old) and Paul McCartney (15 years old) formed their band The Quarrymen in the late 1950s. One year later they welcomed Ringo Starr and then George Harrison, becoming known as The Beatles.
- Red Hot Chili Peppers. These guys also met in high school in Los Angeles back in 1983. First, they formed a band that rehearsed in the garage, before performing around the city and becoming increasingly popular just six years later.
