When buying dog food, it can be difficult to find one’s way around all the different types: dry, wet, grain-free, slimming, veterinary, organic, puppy. Choosing the very best and right food one’s dog depends on the pet’s size, age, breed and activity level. But how does a pet owner really navigate through the different options?

Owners need to choose a dog food that is well balanced containing the vitamins, minerals and nutrients needed to achieve a healthy level of energy.

Choose the manufacturer with thought

Many imported dog food products found on supermarket shelves contain alternative sources of carbohydrates which may over time increase the chance of heart disease, both in large and small dogs.

Traditional dog foods are based on a high amount of grains such as rice, maize and wheat with only a small amount of meat.

The alternative to those feeds is grain-free. This option contains a combination of meat, lentils, beans, peas or potatoes instead. The fact is that there are numerous health benefits for the dog when it gets its proteins from fresh and unprocessed meat as well as ensuring the food is close to the natural sustenance the dog would eat in the wild.

Dog owners demand quality

There is no doubt that the demand for non-grain-based feed has increased. Dog owners want only the best for their dogs so they can live a long and healthy life. Why compromise on the health of one’s pets when there are far healthier options on the market?

New producers of dog food focus on quality rather than quantity. The goal is to get as close to a dog’s natural eating habits which is why their meals are made exclusively from meat and plants that are available in nature. Their products contain minimum 74% meat, eggs and fish prepared as a 100% fresh and unprocessed protein source.

Dog meals can contain a maximum of 30% plant-based ingredients, which are largely berries, seeds and herbs that can be found in any herbivorous prey. Their treat range is – as much as possible – all pure protein and contain no “fillers” or sugary ingredients, such as grains. This contributes to low blood sugar and a stable energy source.

Meals for dogs – not just dog food

It’s essential to find brands that do not produce dog food, they produce meals. Well-produced meals filled with nutrition that keep blood sugar levels stable and that contain only ingredients that benefit and strengthen a dog’s health.

When it comes to dog food price and quality always go hand in hand. People shouldn’t have to lower the quality of the meals one serves to themselves or their dog. Despite the quality, these products are affordable for the vast majority and overall are relatively modest price per day for one’s dog to live a long, happy and healthy life.

Furthermore, the majority of profits go to projects that save endangered animals, protect nature and help stray dogs. Charity plays an important role, which is far from being a business based solely on making a profit.
