James Bond is getting younger and the clues are out there now

Denis Villeneuve is busy finishing Dune: Part Three, but the moment that film wraps, he turns his attention to the franchise everyone has been waiting to see him touch. Amazon MGM took full creative control of the Bond franchise from longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson last year, and the studio has been notably careful about how it talks about the project since. At CinemaCon in April, executives promised the new film would be worthy of the legacy without giving away much else. A 26-year-old Bond, Royal Navy background, working his way toward his 00 designation through a series of missions that test whether he has the instincts for the job. Patrick Gibson plays him, alongside franchise regulars M, Q, and Moneypenny, and the reviews have been some of the best the franchise has received in any medium for years. Critics have been particularly struck by how the game handles Bond’s mistakes, letting him be genuinely outmatched in ways the films rarely allow.

The timing has not gone unnoticed. Gibson voiced and performed motion capture for the role, and more than one outlet has floated him as a genuine dark horse for the live-action job, not because of stunt casting logic but because he has essentially already auditioned for sixteen hours in front of millions of players.

A reboot playbook bond has used before

None of this is unprecedented. When the franchise needed to be reset after Pierce Brosnan’s run, it went back to the start with Daniel Craig and Casino Royale in 2006. A younger, rougher Bond, still learning the job, still capable of losing. It was a gamble at the time and it became the template for the entire Craig era.
