The S in Triple S stands for sole, in recognition of the sneaker’s three soles, which utilise hi-tech materials inspired by running shoes, basketball shoes and track shoes to provide ultimate comfort. Created in 2017 and debuting on the runway for the Balenciaga fall/winter 2017 collection, the shoe was designed to combine haute couture and streetwear, redefining both and remaining consistently popular since. The younger generation have dubbed it an “ugly dad” sneaker – a trend with roots in the 90s that Balenciaga has made loveable.
