The Resort: An interview with writer-director Taylor Chien

When director Taylor Chien stumbled across the remnants of an overgrown, abandoned hotel in Hawaii, he just knew a horror film was waiting to be made on this location. After digging into its past, and hearing tales of the building being haunted from the locals, the idea for a feature began to materialise. But it was a race against time to shoot as the structure was set to be demolished.

Some blood, sweat and tears later came The Resort, a retro-style teen scary movie following four friends who go on adventure to the island to investigate the legend of the half-face girl – and get more than they bargained for.

We had a chat with Chien about how discovering the genuinely spooky spot of the abandoned hotel in Hawaii inspired him to make a horror picture; how filming it in it dark rooms and hallways itself had its challenging and freaky moments; and how he hopes viewers won’t take the piece too seriously but sit back and enjoy the ride.
