Luther – The Fallen Sun: On the red carpet with Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis, Lauryn Ajufo and Jamie Payne

After five seasons of Luther, there was always talk of whether a further season might ever happen – or even a film. Finally, after much waiting and anticipation, fans have been treated to a feature-length movie starring their favourite detective, played by the one-and-only Idris Elba. Whether or not the endless rumours of him being the next Bond ever come to fruition, he more than proves his suitability for the role as the brooding DCI in The Fallen Sun. There’s no denying this film isn’t for the fainthearted, however: the dark recesses of human nature are fully mined in a sinister story of what can happen when the dangerous corners of the Internet are allowed to flourish. Standout performances also come from Andy Serkis, who of course famously voiced The Lord of The Rings‘s Gollum, but is here far more frightening as the movie’s villain, and Cynthia Erivo as a fellow detective.

The Upcoming had the pleasure of being invited to the BFI IMAX for the film’s premiere, where we had the chance to chat to the cast and creatives. Erivo, donning a stunning silver-sequinned gown, stopped to tell us about the appeal of jumping on board with the film project as DCI Odette, and what it was like working with Elba.

Serkis also shared the experience of leaning into a villainous role for the movie.

Lauryn Ajufo reflected on her experience of being on-set and the intensity of the role, playing Erivo’s character’s daughter.

Carl Spencer further shared what it was like to join a story and world that already has such a fan following, and what makes Elba stand out as an actor.

Thomas Coombes told us about playing Archie Woodward and the themes that arise from the feature.

Henry Hereford also stopped to speak to us about playing Brian Lee.

Dermot Crowley talked about having the chance to return to his character of Martin Schenk and why he loves working with Elba.

Director Jamie Payne and screenwriter Neil Cross gave their reflections on how they decided to continue the story of the series in a self-contained film.
