An unparalleled seaside retreat: The Grand hotel in Brighton

An unparalleled seaside retreat: The Grand hotel in Brighton

Standing centre-stage on Brighton’s celebrated seafront, the Grand lives up to its prestigious title. It was designed by John Whichcord Jr, and built in 1864, and the charming Victorian establishment is conveniently located one hour from central London. Unsurprisingly, it is steeped in British history and has many stories to tell, from the birth of a royal baby to ABBA’s famous stay after winning the 1974 Eurovision song contest.

Entering the hotel, visitors are immediately struck by its traditional grandeur: the original sweeping spiral staircase and towering marble columns frame a lavish lounge and convivial reception area. Upon check-in, the concierge team is on hand to swiftly transfer guests’ luggage to their rooms – a deluxe sea view for some.

The exquisite bedrooms are equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay, including Egyptian cotton bed linen, a large flat-screen television, a coffee machine, a dressing gown and slippers. Meanwhile, a spacious seating area provides the opportunity to sit back and unwind in spectacular surroundings.

Undoubtedly, the most impressive aspects are floor-to-ceiling windows and centrally positioned French doors, which guarantee rooms are bathed in natural light. The latter open onto a substantial private balconies, offering breathtaking views of the beach and boundless ocean. Golden hour is a truly magical experience from the sixth floor! Guests can sit mesmerised, watching the sunset and listening to the sound of waves crashing against the shore, before heading downstairs for a hearty dinner.

The hotel boasts two restaurants: The Grill and Cyan. The first is located in a beautifully decorated conservatory at the front of the hotel, and managed by award-winning chefs, who incorporate the finest, sustainably sourced ingredients in their dishes. Highly recommended is the Whole Seabass Fillet and Sussex Cheese Platter.

Once stomachs are sufficiently lined, it is time to sample several delectable cocktails in the Victoria Bar. Popular with residents and visitors alike, this saloon is furnished with extravagant chandeliers, plush sofas and a charming open fire. Its extensive menu is guaranteed to satisfy every culinary preference, whether one desires a speedy snack, deluxe afternoon tea or celebratory beverage. Moreover, the lively yet laid-back ambience serves as a perfect end to the day.

In the morning, guests are offered a variety of continental and hot breakfast options, which can be savoured in the main restaurant or in the privacy of their room. Opting for the last, a filling selection can be enjoyed whilst basking in the sunshine on the balcony one last time.

With its five-star service, magnificent coastal views and proximity to tourist attractions (including the Lanes, the Royal Pavilion, the Palace Pier and the British Airways i360) the Grand presents an unparalleled seaside retreat.
