“It’s hilarious at times, it’s deeply painful and hard to watch at times, but what else do you want from films?”: Joe Pearlman on Lewis Capaldi – How I’m Feeling Now

“It’s hilarious at times, it’s deeply painful and hard to watch at times, but what else do you want from films?”: Joe Pearlman on Lewis Capaldi – How I’m Feeling Now

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or not listening to any popular music for the last five years, you’ll know who Lewis Capaldi is – or at least know his voice, often to be heard belting out profoundly emotive lyrics that seem wise beyond the singer-songwriter’s 26 years. What you may know less well is all that has been going on behind the talent for a number-one hit. BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Joe Pearlman (Bros: The Screaming Steps) is here to change that with his candid, often blisteringly funny, but in equal parts heart-wrenching documentary How I’m Feeling Now.

The Upcoming spoke to the director about why he was driven to take on his down-to-earth Scottish subject, the more challenging periods of seeing Capaldi suffer chronic anxiety and debilitating mental health issues in the wake of monumental global success, in contrast with the amazing moments he also shared with the young lad and those close to him in his hometown of Whitburn. We further discussed the importance of throwing a spotlight on mental health issues for those in the public eye, but also more broadly, and his forthcoming project working with Robbie Williams.
