“Despite being savagely removed from their world, people can relate because it’s about family”: Clare Dunne and Emmett J Scanlan on Kin season two

It seems Irish film and cinema are really having a moment, with awards ceremonies awash with stars hailing from the Green Isle. Or rather, at least, it’s finally getting the recognition it deserves. Fitting right into that context is crime thriller show Kin, now returning for its second season on the BBC. A taut show that traverses a gritty tale of family and power in Dublin’s underworld, this next chapter delves deeper into the complex dynamics of the Kinsella family, who’ve taken the prime spot in the city’s criminal hierarchy. However, an even greater foe threatens their position, bringing the show’s core question to the fore: just how far will you go to protect your family?

The incredible cast return, with Clare Dunne (Herself) once again putting in a formidable performance as Amanda, her past traumas solidifying into something steely as she takes up the role of matriarch of the Kinsella empire, while Emmett J Scanlan (Peaky Blinders) continues as her volatile husband Jimmy, with their relationship taking on a new dynamic. Expect more of the twists and turns of season one, with even higher stakes and emotional depths, set against the brooding backdrop of Ireland’s capital.

The Upcoming heard from stars Dunne and Scanlan about this next instalment, who highlighted the Kins’ empire challenges, including external threats and internal family conflicts. They expressed joy in reuniting for the second season, deepening their characters’ complexities and navigating intense storylines. They praised the cast’s camaraderie and the show’s exploration of family loyalty amidst criminal turmoil, expressing hope for a season three and sharing their upcoming projects.
