When exploring the vast and sprawling boroughs of London, Soho stands out not just for its central location or vibrant scene, but also – with a bit of historical digging – as one of the most established examples of a gentrified area. With hidden corners and seedy rendezvous, it long held a murky reputation. However, precisely because of the varied population and bustling activity, it has gradually turned into the coolest, jazziest part of the city, giving rise to a flourishing creative culture – and the city’s drinks scene wouldn’t be the same without it. Historic speakeasies and contemporary trendy spots alike populate the district, which can appear like a labyrinth or a bottomless treasure trove, depending on the company and the time spent. Enter London Cocktail Tours, whose guide Susan L Schwartz makes it her goal to ignite curiosity and quench the thirst for discovery with a curated walk through some of Soho’s finest bars and their signature cocktails.

With so many bartenders blending innovation into their serves – from crystal coupes to teacups – the most iconic example perhaps being the Espresso Martini, history repeats itself in Soho’s streets, with new must-visit venues continually popping up alongside the most established names. It’s a village that doesn’t stop evolving, and Schwartz navigates it like a local. She leads small groups of up to five people to as many as four bars in one evening: a bit like bar hopping, but with more historical insights, anecdotes, and a personalised journey of discovery through sipping.

The list includes the likes of The Blind Pig and El Camion, with tours purposely organised at the beginning of the week to avoid the crowds, enjoy the space, and benefit from the team’s full attention. Swishing past the mass of tourists and theatre-goers inevitably congesting the pavements, we also passed memorable and intriguing spots that contribute to the city’s mixology heritage. Having connected over the years with countless industry protagonists, Schwartz has devised a trip down memory lane, offering a glimpse into the most hyped bars and hidden gems. What does David Bowie’s Station to Station album have to do with Mai Dim Sum? Was that famous photo of the Sex Pistols crossing the road really taken during the early years of Carnaby Street’s pedestrianisation? How was it acceptable to share a punch with a large party as a pre-dinner drink?

Offerings selected for the tour are served in glasses tailored in size, allowing participants to fully appreciate the tasting agenda. There are also plans to map out routes in other neighbourhoods for further epicurean adventures. Initiatives like London Cocktail Tours are a compelling reminder that bars are not just about booze or a fancy glass of liquor – they’re concentrated expressions of culture, experience, and fun.
