Le Nusa opens on the Strand, bringing modern Indonesian cuisine to London

Le Nusa, a contemporary Indonesian restaurant with established locations in Jakarta and Paris, has just opened its doors in London. The restaurant, aims to present a modern interpretation of Indonesian cuisine to the city’s diverse and discerning dining public. By drawing on the breadth of Indonesia’s regional culinary traditions and updating them with contemporary techniques, Le Nusa offers Londoners a nuanced and evolving take on the food of the archipelago.

Rather than presenting Indonesian cuisine as either a novelty or a nostalgic throwback, Le Nusa positions it as a living, dynamic tradition. The name Le Nusa itself is derived from the word for archipelago, reflecting the restaurant’s commitment to showcasing the diversity of Indonesia’s many islands. The menu features reinterpretations of classic dishes, crafted with an emphasis on balance and restraint.

Among the dishes on offer are Udang Jeruk Bali, which pairs prawns with pomelo, lime, and chilli, as well as Bebek Sambal Andaliman, a pan-seared duck breast served with green chilli and the citrusy heat of andaliman pepper. Traditional comfort food is represented by Soto Betawi, a coconut milk broth with ox tongue, tomato, and melinjo crackers. Heartier options include Tongseng Kambing, a lamb shank in Javanese curry, and Se’i Sapi, a delicately smoked brisket accompanied by sambal luat and basil. Desserts include a deconstructed Kolak Pisang, featuring caramelised banana with pandan, coconut milk, and coconut ice cream.

Le Nusa’s approach in London is shaped by the city’s appreciation for ingredient-led cooking and narrative-driven dining. The kitchen focuses on precision and balance, aiming to allow Indonesian flavours to remain expressive while meeting the expectations of one of the world’s most discerning dining capitals.

The interior design of Le Nusa’s London outpost echoes the restaurant’s culinary philosophy. Batik patterns, woven textiles, and traditional Indonesian artistry such as suntiang and gebyok are incorporated into the décor, creating a poised yet welcoming atmosphere. The space is intended to foster cultural exchange, serving as a venue for both relaxed lunches and celebratory dinners.
