New pirate-themed bar, The Rhum Tavern, opens in London’s West End

The Rhum Tavern, a new bar with A theme inspired by the 17th-century golden age of piracy, has recently opened its doors at 48 Margaret Street, in the bustling heart of London’s West End. This venue is the first solo venture of Gabriel de-Vere, known in the hospitality industry for his previous work at Sketch and Mr Fogg’s.

The bar’s design and concept draw heavily on elements from classic pirate literature and films, aiming to provide patrons with an immersive drinking experience. The interior, meticulously handcrafted by de-Vere himself, features reclaimed timber flooring and walls, a resin counter top inlaid with gold cast pirate coins, and custom-made glassware which is also available for purchase. The ambience is set by lanterns that provide a subtle glow, enhancing the old-world pirate ship aesthetic.

Gabriel de-Vere has introduced a zero-waste cocktail menu, comprising 12 signature cocktails alongside classic mixes with a rum twist. Highlights from the list include the Tepache Rum Punch, prepared with homemade Tepache, a fermented pineapple drink from Mexico, and the Kun-Jali, mixing homemade mango lassi and Damoiseau Mango Rum. The bar also puts a particular spin on the espresso martini, using Bristol Rum and Grand Brulot, topped with chocolate and cheese dust.

The Rhum Tavern boasts one of the capital’s largest and most diverse collections of over 350 rums, ranging from premium to ultra-premium selections. Labels coming from 2 Drifters and Worthy Park showcase the care of bringing attention to both new and emerging brands. The site hosts as well a retail section for purchasing bottles to enjoy at home.

With the aim of educating attendees on global rum trends and production philosophies, the venue will present a programme of fortnightly masterclasses open to the public.

Gabriel de-Vere said “My focus is always primarily on hospitality and the trimmings of great drinks, food, and ambience. The Rhum Tavern has been a passion project for the last few years and has resulted in an experience where rum-led drinks can be enjoyed in a new, immersive style. We have taken a lot of time to create a menu that pushes boundaries with bespoke designed glassware, waste-conscious measures, and flavours that we all love; rum is one of the fastest growing categories, and the opportunity to launch a venue where brands and patrons alike can explore the spirit is a dream come true.”

Next to the curated cocktail list and rum tastings, the bar serves a food menu inspired by historical maritime cuisine, with dishes like Grilled Salt Beef and Crispy Chicken Skins, prepared on a robata grill.
