MUBI sets UK theatrical release for Ariane Labed’s directorial debut September Says

MUBI has confirmed the UK theatrical release of September Says, the first directorial venture by Ariane Labed. The film is scheduled to debut in cinemas across the United Kingdom on 21st February 2025. This announcement follows the film’s world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it was featured in the Un Certain Regard section.

September Says is based on Daisy Johnson’s acclaimed novel Sisters and marks Labed’s transition from acting to directing. The narrative revolves around the complex relationship between two sisters, July and September, portrayed by Mia Tharia and newcomer Pascale Kann, respectively. Rakhee Thakrar plays their mother, Sheela, adding further depth to the family dynamics explored in the film.

The plot explores the lives of the sisters, who, despite their close bond, have distinctly different personalities. September is protective and wary, while July is more open and curious about the world. The story escalates when September is suspended from school, compelling July to navigate life on her own and begin asserting her independence. This shift causes tension within the family, culminating during a stay at an old holiday home in Ireland. Here, the sisters experience a series of surreal events that challenge their relationship and force them to confront unforeseen changes.

The movie, both written and directed by Labed, aims to offer audiences a blend of psychological depth and surreal storytelling, reflecting Labed’s unique vision as a filmmaker. The casting of Tharia, Thakrar and Kann is particularly notable, as it brings together established talent with emerging actors, potentially offering fresh dynamics onscreen.

The film’s exploration of familial bonds and individual identity through a blend of realistic and fantastical elements is anticipated to resonate with a diverse audience, adding a distinctive entry to the UK’s cinematic calendar for 2025.
