“I never pictured anyone other than Jon Hamm in this role”: Jonathan Tropper and cast on Your Friends and Neighbours

Your Friends and Neighbours opens with the glinting perfection of Westmont Village – a pristine suburb masking a slow rot beneath its manicured lawns and marble countertops. Created by Jonathan Tropper, the Apple TV+ series centres on Andrew “Coop” Cooper (Jon Hamm), a disgraced hedge fund manager turned unlikely thief, navigating the brittle ecosystem of old money, status games and quiet desperation. Though pitched as a crime drama, the show deals in emotional heists more than physical ones, exposing the transactional nature of relationships in a world where value is measured in property, privilege and the unspoken rules of survival in a social circle.

Ahead of the show’s release, Tropper spoke with The Upcoming about how his upbringing in upstate New York sparked the idea of the show. He expressed his excitement about bringing the themes of his books to television, and revealed that he had always envisioned Hamm in the lead role.

Amanda Peet, who plays Coop’s ex-wife Mel Cooper, expressed appreciation for her character breaking away from the stereotypical divorcée trope, noting that Mel has both a personal life and a romantic arc of her own. She also discussed the various influences that shaped her portrayal.

Hoon Lee and Eunice Bae, who play Coop’s business manager Barney Choi and his wife Grace, spoke about the uniqueness of their on-screen marriage, describing it as a rare and special depiction of a relationship. Bae also mentioned that her conversations with Tropper deepened her understanding of Grace as a character.

Lena Hall, who portrays Coop’s sister Ali Cooper, along with Isabel Marie Gravitt and Donovan Colan, who play Coop’s children Tori and Hunter, shared the different ways they prepared for their roles – from practicing tennis to learning guitar – as well as their favourite scenes to film.

Aimee Carrero, who plays housekeeper Elena Benitez, and Mark Tallman, who portrays retired athlete Nick Brandes, both praised Tropper’s writing and emphasised that their roles were rich and layered, transcending common casting stereotypes.
