Your Friends and Neighbours

Your Friends and Neighbours | Show review

Drawing on the Tri-State Area’s disillusioned upper middle class that frequent his novels, Jonathan Tropper’s Your Friends and Neighbours is set in Westmont Village, a meticulously crafted fictional commuter town that could easily pass for Scarsdale, Bridgeport or any number of affluent enclaves just outside New York City. It is a land of sprawling estates, impeccable gardens, private schools and country clubs, where success is measured in invitations and membership tiers.

The series follows Andrew “Coop” Cooper (Jon Hamm), a former hedge fund manager who, after an abrupt fall from grace, begins stealing from his wealthy neighbours to keep himself afloat. But while Your Friends and Neighbours presents itself as a crime drama, it is less about the heists and more about the world they take place in. Hamm, with his signature mix of suaveness and simmering discontent, plus echoes of his past roles, is pitch-perfect as a man who has spent his life navigating power structures – until he suddenly finds himself locked out.

Tropper’s writing is sharp and unsentimental, capturing not just the rituals of wealth but the psychology behind them. Westmont’s elite – Coop’s ex-wife Mel (Amanda Peet), his long-time friend and business manager Barney Choi (Hoon Lee), his wealthy wife Grace (Eunice Bae), in a wonderfully acerbic turn) – move through this world with the effortless entitlement of those who have never had to question their place in it. Even Mel, who sees through Tom’s excuses, is ultimately more concerned with maintaining appearances than anything else.

Your Friends and Neighbours isn’t just about one man’s moral descent – it’s about the ecosystem that makes it possible. The effortless flow of luxury goods into discreet resale channels, the quiet erasure of small transgressions by those who can afford it – this is more class commentary than crime drama. With this series, Tropper turns his keen eye for the human condition toward a world where consequences are reserved for those without the means to avoid them.
