Cannes Film Festival unveils dual poster honouring A Man and a Woman for 78th Edition

The Cannes Film Festival has announced that its 78th edition, scheduled to take place from 13th to 24th May 2025 in Cannes, France, will feature a double official poster for the first time in its history. The dual design pays tribute to the iconic 1966 film A Man and a Woman, directed by Claude Lelouch and starring Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant. The decision to use two posters side by side comes as the festival marks the 60th anniversary of the film’s production, recognising its lasting influence on cinema and its celebrated depiction of romantic connection.

A Man and a Woman tells the story of two emotionally wounded individuals who meet and form a bond, a narrative that earned the film the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1966 and two Academy Awards in 1967. Over the decades, it has received widespread acclaim and is often cited for its memorable embrace between the lead characters. The festival’s organisers describe the embrace as “the 7th Art’s most famous”, referencing the French word “étreinte”, which is an anagram of “éternité” (eternity).

The new posters, created by graphic designers Hartland Villa and featuring imagery from Les Films 13, depict the film’s central couple on a deserted beach under a turbulent sky, accompanied by evocative lines from the film’s dialogue. The festival statement notes, “Because you can’t separate a man and a woman who love each other, because you can’t separate that Man from that Woman, the Festival de Cannes has chosen for the first time in its history to present a double official poster. A Man and a Woman. Side by side. Back together.”

The decision to honour A Man and a Woman comes at a time when, according to festival organisers, there is a desire to “(re)unite; to bring bodies, hearts and souls closer together; to encourage freedom and portray movement in order to perpetuate it; to embody the whirlwind of life to celebrate it, again and again.” The festival also acknowledges the passing of both lead actors, who were themselves former Cannes award recipients – Trintignant won Best Actor for Z in 1969, and Aimée won Best Actress for A Leap in the Dark in 1980.

The official posters are now available for pre-order from the festival’s online boutique. Further information about the 78th Festival de Cannes can be found on the event’s official website.
