Kali Uchis – Sincerely

Colombian-American singer-songwriter Kali Uchis has explored a wide variety of genres over her decade-long career. Though she primarily gravitates toward Latin pop and R’n’B, her sound remains entirely her own: genre-defying, distinctive and emotionally rich. Her latest release, Sincerely, is an excellent reflection of how she has matured as both an artist and an individual. Across 14 heartfelt songs, Uchis is as introspective and mellifluous as ever, but now sings from the perspective of a new mother who has found true love.
While her previous album, Red Moon in Venus, revolved around her own self-discovery, Sincerely showcases what it means to be settled. The album’s opening track, Heaven Is a Home, beautifully captures the calm Uchis finds in her family life, suggesting that even the chaos of the world can be mellowed by love and faith, forming the record’s emotional foundation.
Romantic love and sexuality – long-standing themes in Uchis’s work – are explored with nuance throughout the album. Sugar! Honey! Love! may be as gentle and sweet as its title implies, and while Heaven Is a Home introduced a heavenly, God-fearing tone, other tracks take a deeper, sensual turn. For: You and Silk Lingerie, for example, delve into more dramatic, sultry territory and blend into one another seamlessly both thematically and sonically. This continuity flows into Territorial, which is a mystifying track co-produced by Nick Ferraro and Jeff Hazen – although Uchis presents a hot-blooded narrative, the groovy production keeps it feeling light and hypnotic. The singer’s seductive energy does not end there, however, whether it is channelled through the vintage haze of All I Can Say or the celestial atmosphere of Angels All Around Me.
The thematic peak of the album is found in Sunshine & Rain. Here, Uchis combines sensuality, spirituality and her flower-child sensibilities into a single story. Her vocals act as a bridge between worlds: ethereal, yet grounded, then sacred and intimate.
ILYSMIH closes the album with the same cinematic grace from the beginning of the record – it echoes the spiritual tones of Heaven is a Home whilst also referencing the intensity of Sunshine & Rain to bring everything full circle. As the final notes fade into the sound of her child’s laughter, Uchis leaves listeners with a gentle reminder of how love, in its purest form, grounds her.
Overall, Uchis invites listeners into the loving, spiritual sanctuary she has found as her new family has continued to grow – Sincerely beautifully captures the serenity and complexity of a woman who is now fully confident in what it means to be in love, and although Uchis lays her heart, as well as the most intimate aspects of her lovelife, out in the open for all to experience, she shows no fear.
