The best places to visit in Spain during shoulder season (with the best weather)

Spain is a great tourist destination. Shoulder season is the name given to the off-peak season and a great time to visit.

Over the past few years, Europe has become increasingly hot over the summer months. In some cases, this has become unbearable. Many tourists are now planning their holidays around the off-peak, known as the shoulder season. This provides all the benefits of a holiday, minus the stifling heat. Luckily Holidu, the holiday rental portal, has created a ranking of the best places to visit in Spain during shoulder season, based on the highest daily temperatures, UV rating and humidity levels.

Castellon de la Plana

Shoulder season can be split into two distinct categories. These are the early months of the year, going from March to June. The second is the months of September and October. In both halves, Castellon de la Plana comes out on top. It is second for weather in the first half of the year, pipped by only Valencia. In the second half, it is top of the list.

March starts off here with an average temperature of 18 degrees going to 27 degrees in June. The average UV rating also increases from 5 to 9 in this period, making it comfortable. In the latter months, it is a little warmer going from 27 to 22 degrees. On average, UV ratings also go from six to two.

But aside from the weather, what else is there to do? Castellon de la Plana really has something for everyone. It offers all the beach holidays one could desire, as it is situated on the beautiful Costa del Azahar. However, for those in search of the outdoors and adventure, the Desert de les Palmes is located to the north with its stunning yet traversable mountain range.

Even if one decides to stay in the town itself, they will be treated to some of the best architecture the Valencian province has to offer. The iconic Central Market Hall is available for stocking up on delicious local fare, with the gothic Concatedral de Santa Maria and its bell tower sitting at the centre. There is also the 17th-century Baroque Town Hall.

Valencia

Valencia comes out on top for the March to June months. Temperatures range from 19 to 26 degrees, and the UV rating is between 5 and 9. It still shouldn’t be written off in September and October, but the higher temperatures tend to linger longer into the year here.

Finding a better city break than Valencia proves difficult. At the heart of the city stands Valencia Cathedral, constructed on the ruins of an ancient Roman temple, which later transformed into a mosque before reverting. It encapsulates elements from each distinct period and houses the Holy Chalice. Architecture enthusiasts will appreciate further exploration, such as La Lonja de la Seda, a gothic-era silk exchange.

The city also serves as a paradise for shoppers. The Barrio del Carmen, an ancient town, offers a labyrinth of narrow streets, alleys, and plazas filled with everything from delightful restaurants to boutique retail experiences, leading visitors to the Mercat Central de Valencia, one of Spain’s busiest markets.

For those seeking outdoor activities and relaxation, Valencia boasts beautiful beaches. The option to escape the urban environment for nature is readily available with the Parque Natural de la Albufera National Park located just outside the city.

Can Picafort

After Castellon de la Plana, in the later months of the year, Can Picafort emerges as a top choice. Its temperatures and UV levels are almost identical to Castellon de la Plana, but it offers a quite different cultural and tourist experience.

Can Picafort presents a much more classic Spanish beach holiday experience. Therefore, for those seeking rest, relaxation, or a family getaway in the later months, this destination is highly recommended. It is located on the northern coast of Mallorca, along the Bay of Alcudia. The beach in this area is heavenly: white, sandy, and surrounded by crystal-clear water.

As a tourist destination, Can Picafort provides all the expected amenities: food, entertainment, watersports, and shopping. In July and August, the crowds can be overwhelming, but come September and October, they disperse, making Can Picafort truly relaxing. Additionally, some exceptional vineyards are found outside Can Picafort. By heading up to the hills on a dedicated tour, visitors can explore places such as Bodega Butxet for glasses, or bottles of Syrah.

The beauty of Spain is its ability to cater to all types of tourists. Even in the newer beach resort areas, one is never far from natural beauty or cultural attractions. Spain awaits exploration, and by visiting in the shoulder season, one can experience everything it has to offer, minus the blazing sun of July and August.
