Engel and Jang unveils modern afternoon tea experience at the Royal Exchange

A new afternoon tea experience has launched this month at Engel and Jang, a restaurant located within the Royal Exchange in the City of London. The menu, available on weekdays from 2.30 to 5pm, was conceived in collaboration with pastry chef Lorena Tommasi, and aims to reinterpret the traditional British afternoon tea with a modern approach.

The tea features a selection of both savoury and sweet items. Savoury options include open sandwiches such as smoked salmon, trout mousse and pickled cucumber, garnished with nasturtium flowers, as well as a roast beef, celeriac remoulade and rocket, finished with edible allium blossoms. For a plant-based alternative, there’s pickled beetroot, hummus and baby spinach, topped with calendula petals. The sweet course includes apple choux, sachertorte and a trio of tartlets featuring lemon and fresh fruit. A notable addition is the Three O’Clock Coffee Cake, described as “a nod to both tradition and luxury.”

Beverages are selected from a tea menu curated by JING, offering a range of classic and modern blends such as English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Chamomile Flower, Blackcurrant & Hibiscus, Green Tea and Peppermint Leaf. For guests wishing to mark a special occasion, sparkling wine and champagne are available, among them, Hattingley Valley Classic Reserve NV and R de Ruinart Brut NV.

The restaurant says Tommasi, who has previously worked at Caprice Group, Jeremy King’s restaurants and under chef Claude Bosi, brings “both finesse and flair to every bite”. Her afternoon tea is priced from £35 per person, and is positioned as an option for city workers, tourists, and food enthusiasts seeking a contemporary take on a British tradition in a historic setting.
