Spinal Tap reunite for one last gig in Spinal Tap II – trailer drops ahead of cinema release this September

Rock and roll’s most hilariously dysfunctional band is back. The official trailer for Spinal Tap II has been released, teasing the long-awaited return of David St Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls as they gear up for one final, inevitably chaotic concert. The film opens exclusively in UK cinemas on 12th September 2025.
More than four decades after This Is Spinal Tap redefined mockumentary comedy and became a cult classic, director and co-star Rob Reiner returns to the helm as Marty DiBergi, the hapless documentarian determined to capture the band’s reunion. Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer reprise their iconic roles as the legendary (and legendarily inept) heavy metal trio whose amps famously go to 11.
Spinal Tap II sees the band reform after a 15-year hiatus for what promises to be their final show. But with the group’s history of epic meltdowns, bizarre stage disasters and rock star egos, the reunion teeters on the edge of catastrophe. Featuring brand-new music, biting satire, and surprise appearances from major names in rock, the film delivers both a nostalgic hit and sharp commentary on the spectacle of fame and ageing in the music industry.
The sequel is written by Reiner, McKean, Guest and Shearer, who also serve as producers alongside Michele Reiner and Matthew George.
Spinal Tap II aims to hit the same note of anarchy and absurdity that made its predecessor a touchstone of comedy filmmaking, while offering a fresh and fittingly over-the-top sendoff to one of cinema’s most beloved fictional bands. Whether the band manages to recapture the glory or combust entirely remains to be seen – but fans can expect the same pitch-perfect mix of satire and slapstick when the film lands in cinemas this autumn.
