Smokey Kudu, a new cocktail lounge from restaurateurs Amy Corbin and Patrick Williams, opened its doors this week above their South African-inspired restaurant, Kudu, in Marylebone. Located on the corner of Moxon Street, the venue offers a space for both pre-dinner drinks and extended evening gatherings, featuring a cocktail menu influenced by flavours from the region and a selection of complementary bar snacks.

The lounge is led by head bartender Brian Tapera, who has curated a 15-drink menu that blends reimagined classics with more experimental creations. His list includes a Kalahari Sunset, made with pisco, apricot brandy, passionfruit and apple, and a Cape Old Fashioned, which combines brandy with frangelico, cherry heering, fernet branca and chocolate bitters. Wild Mary, a twist on the Bloody Mary, features mushroom-infused mezcal with a tomato, lime and pineapple premix. Returning favourites from the original Smokey Kudu in South London also feature on the menu, including the South London Paloma, the Saffa Rita and the Braai Negroni. A selection of non-alcoholic cocktails is also available, such as the Virgin Paloma and the Kudu Thai.

In addition to cocktails, the lounge offers a wine list focused on South African producers, with both glass and bottle options. The small cellar offers vintage selections from European estates, such as a 2006 Château Mouton Rothschild Pauillac.

There is also a food menu that consists of small plates and snacks designed to pair with drinks. Among them are Kalahari Spiced Biltong, oysters served with tomato dashi and wakame, Grilled Artichoke with Gremolata and a Smoked Prawn Cruller with Miso and Pickled Cucumber.

The design of the new Smokey Kudu location was developed in collaboration with Fabled Studio, who also worked on the restaurant below. It features red clay walls, a berry-hued carpet, a central fireplace and artwork including Liberty by South African artist Tamary Kudita. A private dining room, located behind an ochre curtain, accommodates up to 12 guests and is available for hire throughout the week.
