Summer earns spot on quarterly best album chart

Recently,NetEase Cloud Music released its official music chart for the first quarter of 2026. As one of China’s major original and independent music community platforms, NetEase Cloud Music currently hosts more than one million independent artists and over 5.6 million original tracks. Its quarterly rankings evaluate works through multiple dimensions, including streaming performance, user engagement, saves, and production quality, reflecting music projects that demonstrate both market attention and artistic significance during a given period.

In this quarter’s rankings, works by internationally recognized artists such as Bruno Mars, Charlie Puth, Mayday, and IVE created an especially competitive lineup. Among them, musician Delphia’s concept album Summer successfully earned a place on the quarterly Best Album shortlist, recognized for its distinctive artistic direction and cohesive sonic identity.

Designed as an immersive listening experience, Summer explores the atmosphere, energy, and emotional textures associated with the season. The project blends electronic music, jazz-inspired elements, and rap influences into a cohesive body of work characterized by cinematic transitions, layered arrangements, and a strong sense of sonic continuity.

Following its release, the album received a strong response from listeners on the platform. Its eleven tracks collectively generated more than 130,000 likes and saves, reflecting substantial audience engagement and helping establish Summer as one of the notable independent releases of the quarter.

While the album’s genre-blending approach became one of its defining strengths, it also introduced unique production challenges. Bringing together diverse musical influences while maintaining a consistent listening experience required careful coordination throughout post-production. Maintaining the album’s original atmosphere while achieving a unified sonic presentation became a critical objective.

To address these challenges, mastering engineer Wade Warhol (Yixuan Zhu), who was responsible for the album’s mastering and streaming-platform preparation, focused on creating consistency across the project while preserving the atmosphere and emotional character that defined the original recordings.

A key part of Wade Warhol’s mastering work involved addressing the album’s wide dynamic differences across tracks. Because the project brought together songs with different production approaches, some tracks arrived with a more compressed and limited character, while certain dance-oriented pieces retained a broader and more active dynamic range. Rather than applying a single uniform mastering treatment to the entire album, Wade used a track-specific approach to dynamic control, carefully balancing compression and expansion where needed to bring the songs into a coherent album-level presentation. This process reduced abrupt differences in perceived loudness, density, and movement between tracks, while still preserving the individual energy, groove, and emotional character of each song. The result was a more unified listening experience in which the album could move naturally between intimate, atmospheric moments and more rhythm-driven sections without losing its overall sonic identity.

One of the defining characteristics of Summer is its warm and spacious sonic aesthetic. Throughout the mastering process, particular attention was given to maintaining the depth, openness, and immersive qualities that connect the album’s diverse musical influences. Instead of relying solely on digital processing, Wade utilized analog equipment like the Manley Vari-Mu Compressor to enhance harmonic depth and stereo width, allowing piano textures and other key elements to breathe within the mix. Special consideration was also given to low-frequency balance, dynamic movement, and playback consistency across headphones, smartphones, car audio systems, and home speakers.

Following the completion of post-production, Summer emerged as a more cohesive listening experience while retaining the artistic individuality of its eleven tracks. The album’s inclusion on NetEase Cloud Music’s quarterly Best Album shortlist reflects both Delphia’s creative vision and the collaborative technical efforts behind the project. For Wade Warhol, the project represents another example of the increasingly important role that independent audio engineers play in modern music production, helping artists preserve their identity while preparing release-ready recordings.
