Bun House Disco, the Shoreditch restaurant inspired by 1980s Hong Kong nightlife, will launch a late-night food and drinks concept called Disco Lates next Friday, in collaboration with London chefs TĀ TĀ Eatery and community collective Circle13. Running from its premises on Bethnal Green Road, the quirky concept combines pairing-led snacks with cocktails, and will operate on Thursdays to Saturdays between 10pm and midnight.

Bun House began in Soho in 2017 and moved its flagship restaurant to Chinatown in 2019. It specialises in steamed buns and small plates, and now operates two London sites: Bun House Chinatown and Bun House Disco in Shoreditch – the newer of the two. This latest idea at the East London venue positions itself between a traditional dinner service and a night out, drawing on the practice in Canton of restaurants, bars and music venues remaining open well after the dinner hour.

For the social aspect, Bun House has worked with Circle13, a collective that creates spaces intended to bring younger Londoners together. Meanwhile, the food menu has been developed with Ana and Meng, the couple behind TĀ TĀ Eatery, who combine Asian and Mediterranean flavours. The venue’s innovative drinks programme is based on Chinese herbal medicine principles, reworking ingredients traditionally associated with wellbeing while using contemporary cocktail techniques.

Six signature pairings have been designed so that each cocktail responds directly to a specific snack, with the two presented together as a single item. The six duets cost £16 each and include an Osmanthus Gimlet presented with a Canton Gilda of spicy tofu, quail egg, pickled garlic and cucumber; a Sichuan Paloma with stuffed picante peppers filled with whipped fuyu and chilli oil; and a Pandan Espresso Martini matched with the restaurant’s fried milk dessert. Other libations include a Sweet-Grass Old Fashioned, a Shaoxing Martini and a Melon Margarita.

Also on the menu are Chinese-style beef jerky, cuttlefish sausage, grilled lap cheong chorizo glazed with honey mustard, tofu hummus with vegetable and wasabi relish, and a deep-fried poussin burger finished with a sweet and sour glaze. Guests are also given curried popcorn on arrival.

Z He, founder of Bun House, said: “Disco Lates is our take on a new generation of late-night dining – where food, drinks, music and atmosphere come together in a more playful and social way. Working alongside an incredible group of creatives, we’ve created a style of pairing-led late night experience that feels contemporary yet relaxed and distinctly Bun House. We can’t wait for people to experience the second half of the night with us.”
