Fake TV 2 / Powder Room After Party
Imagine Bikini Kill but a bit more metal and you have Fake Club – the new all girl band oozing with talent and just as much attitude to go with it. They are the soundtrack to MJ Delaney’s new girl-com Powder Room and the creators of Fake TV, which this week saw the filming of its second episode covering the official after party of the film’s release.
Fake TV is a bit like when MTV actually played music. Reminiscent of a time when TFI Friday was King and everybody loved Beavis and Butthead, it works the 90s home video look…but on YouTube. Its digital dispersion gives the World Wide Web a great insight to new bands like LTNT, Nymph, Deaf Club and Francobollo.
Episode 2 saw the likes of Kurtz, Storms, Fake Club and The Howling take the stage, accompanied by three to four cameramen. The music existed somewhere in the 90s when Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan had hair, while some dark and sludgy power chords infested the room. It was at this point that Fake Club made their appearance. Dominating the stage, the five girls opened with Do What You Gotta Do, its melodic metal elements making for an infectious tune. Their style, music and anarchistic tendencies (such as flashing underwear and poking fun at David Cameron) made it tempting to compare them to the Riot Grrrls. Still, there is something more to Fake Club that has them surpass this label.
Leaving with Over and Over and a pumped up crowd, the place was finally ready for London’s own The Howling. Sexy, slick, superb with screeching guitars and frontman Blacky’s powerful vocals, this five-piece were pure rock ‘n’ roll. There was something reassuring about them, as if they had come to save us all from will.i.am and more club remixes; tracks like Rock ‘n’ Rolla providing the night with good, authentic and long-overdue rock.
A fantastic night that had you longing for the 90s again – bring on Episode 3!
