The first Sagra di Shoreditch festival is coming to East London with food and fun for charity

Big Mamma’s Gloria is holding its first Italian-style food festival this August. The inaugural Sagra di Shoreditch is set to take place on Saturday 15^th August in the gardens at the Museum of the Home in Hoxton, throwing a 300-person party in aid of two food charities. And the best part is all profits will be donated to The Felix Project and Shoreditch Trust’s Community Table.

The festival is modelled on Italy’s Ferragosto celebrations, the mid-August public holiday where neighbours, families and friends traditionally get together for communal food and fun. On Kingsland Lawns between 12.30 and 5.30pm there will be one long table, Italian wine, live performers, dancing, a tombola and a four-course meal prepared by several of Shoreditch’s favourite restaurants. Tickets are £75, which includes a welcome drink, the four-course meal, wine and access to all of the entertainment and activities.

On the menu there’s food and drink from a range of local bars and restaurants. Italian institution Gloria will provide antipasti, including burrata, Prosciutto Crudo di Parma, homemade focaccia and a five-kilogram Mozzarella di Bufala. They’ll also be offering a Pasta Fredda made with yellow cherry tomatoes, courgette and Taggiasca olives. Meanwhile, Indian food innovators Kricket will bring spice-packed dishes and modern British chophouse Blacklock will serve their White Chocolate Cheesecake at the table.

Wine will be supplied throughout the afternoon by the Michelin-starred Luca in Clerkenwell and local Italian wine bar Passione Vino. Entertainment includes a tombola jam-packed with goodies donated by local businesses such as Legado, Masaj and Hart Shoreditch, as well as a painting activity run by Pinot & Picasso, a Photobook Cafe pop-up and live music.

The two charities benefiting from the proceeds work in food provision, offering increasingly needed support to those struggling to feed themselves and their families. The Felix Project redistributes surplus food from suppliers to charities and community groups across London, while Shoreditch Trust’s Community Table provides meals and help to local residents. The entire proceeds of the festival will go towards these causes, making the day not only a gathering with friends, but also a chance to give back.

The Sagra di Shoreditch marks the first time the businesses involved have collaborated on an event of this scale in the neighbourhood. Fingers crossed it will become an annual occasion!
