The Veils at Scala
The Veils have been around for over a decade now, releasing four studio albums, two EPs and nearly a dozen singles. As an indie/alternative rock band from London, in that time they have become known for their chaotic and highly cathartic live performances. This is something they prove here at the former cinema turned live venue Scala near King’s Cross.
Of course, as the rumours suggest, frontman Finn Andrews is the first member that is noticed on stage. The rest of the band is overshadowed by his presence. Their record label, Rough Trade Records’ creator and owner Geoff Travis has compared Andrews to a “young but maturing real artist in the vein of Nick Cave and David Bowie.” Andrews’ father, a forming member of 80s bands XTC and Shriekback did play with Bowie as well as Iggy Pop and Robert Fripp. Andrews even started his own record label named Pitch Beast Records in order to release The Veils’ most recent album Time Stays, We Go, which is most predominant in tonight’s set.
Andrews adopts his typical “possessed” persona throughout the show but it is the songs that hypnotised tonight. New single Through The Deep Dark Wood is a riveting, loud and fast-paced performance that fits well with the band’s persona. Track Bloom from EP Troubles of the Brain shows a calmer, more controlled side of the band with its relaxed bass line and composed vocals from Andrews. This is the highlight of their show.
Finn Andrews is the main act here: his performance as a frontman is entrancing. Aged only 29, he is no Bowie or Nick Cave but is certainly heading that way. He holds a great rapport with the audience and brings each song to life. Although they have been around for about 12 years now, this is a band that has a long way to go. They have a lot of work to get there, but with a leader like Andrews, they will hopefully get the wider audience that they deserve.
