The Michelin Guide 2014: London shines bright as nine restaurants receive their first star

Love it or hate it, The Michelin Guide has crowned some of the world’s best restaurants with their coveted stars and chefs and foodies alike are no doubt pouring over the list of this year’s honourees. London had a particularly good run, with a number of restaurants joining the Michelin league for the first time and others extending their number of stars.

There were no fewer than nine restaurants that were welcomed into the red guide, with Ametsa with Arzak Instruction, HKK, Outlaws at The Capital and Social Eating House among the group to be awarded their first star. LIMA, the Peruvian venture by famed chef Virgilio Martinez, became the first Peruvian restaurant in The United Kingdom and Europe to be awarded a star and has only been open for just over a year. Other newcomers into the one-star club are Brasserie Chavot and Story. Story, opened by Tom Sellers, has not been part of the London food scene for very long but certainly made an impact on it with their nostalgic take on fine dining.

The two restaurants whose staff will certainly be enjoying celebratory drinks are The Greenhouse, run by Chef Arnaud Bignon, and Dinner by Heston, headed up by Ashely Palmer-Watts. However, not everyone will be rejoicing, as L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon is now down to one and Petersham Nurseries lost their only star. Michelin heavyweights Gordon Ramsey and Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester retained their bright status with all three stars staying firmly in place.
