The Fauns at Rough Trade East

The Fauns at Rough Trade East | Live review

The UK has its fair share of depressed shoegaze bands with delayed guitars and pale blue voices, so why do so many support The Fauns?

For several good reasons. First, their songs are prototypically shoegaze, but if you take away all the noisy arrangements you can still find great melodies. Second, in the live dimension they are impressively talented, probably because they are not absolute beginners – the average age of the members is around thirty. Finally, even if they are reminiscent of different British bands (Saint Etienne, Broadcast, My Bloody Valentine, and of course The Smiths in terms of mood), the velvety voice of singer Alison Garner grants them a clear personality, which is always of great value.

At Rough Trade East yesterday, the band presented its new record The Lights in front of a small but very warm audience, playing honest pop for about thirty minutes. In the live set as usual, the noisy delayed guitar becomes heavier (the band has two guitarists), while the voice of the singer becomes more rare, and the bass and the drum speed up the rhythm section.

Finally, here are a pleasant and talented young band that will for sure only become more and more popular.
