Peggy Sue at Oslo

If there’s any upcoming band you should have your eye on right now, it’s Peggy Sue. Hailing from Brighton, this indie-folk four-piece have already toured with an impressive array of artists including Jack White, Mumford & Sons and The Maccabees. Their fourth LP Choir of Echoes was described by NME as “a record of soulful depths and heady, emotional highs” and has garnered the band significant attention. So when we heard they’d be performing at Oslo in Hackney, we just had to go along.

What’s immediately apparent from the start of the set is the musical talent each band member possesses. Rosa Rex and Katy Klaw stand side by side armed with electric guitars, creating a colossal sound as they sing. Ben Rubinstein harbours a thundering, rolling bass line and drummer Olly Joyce pounds rhythmic, intense patterns that complement the overall sound. And that’s just the opening song.

The dreamy All We’ll Keep is reminiscent of a Warpaint track – angelic vocal harmonies, floaty guitar melodies and some pretty intense drumming combined to create one hell of a song that sends chills down our spines. Watchman and Yo Mama appear to be old favourites that the crowd go wild for, and the more unfamiliar material from the latest album is received equally well.

This post-blues four-piece have shown a remarkable consistency in their talent for songwriting, churning out four delightful LPs to date and touring alongside some impressive names. It won’t be long before Peggy Sue are themselves a household name, and judging by tonight’s performance, the  next big stars of the indie-folk scene.
