Sunset Safari at ZSL London Zoo: review

Sunset Safari at ZSL London Zoo: review

London Zoo’s popular Zoo Lates have been given a make-over for 2015. In its place comes a more family-friendly offering, every Friday from 6-10pm: Sunset Safari.

Excited at the thought of reliving our childhood memories, we embarked on a self-guided Safari Trail – complete with a rather complicated map – where we saw magnificent animals, watched feeds and attended a fascinating talk about the Zoo. Highlights included the Penguin Beach, which recreates an impressive South American landscape around England’s biggest penguin pool, Meet the Monkeys and the ever-so-sweet meerkats.

A visit to one of the Wild Talks or Science Stations is a must, with ZSL’s own conservationists, scientists and keepers sharing gripping tales from the field, and revealing fascinating facts from the world of wildlife. Performances at the Zoo’s Theatre of Life will enthral guests of all ages, with entertaining insights into unique animal behaviours.

As the sun set, visitors were invited to unwind at the Safari Base Camp, with an acoustic guitar performance, providing an idyllic break after following the track. Unfortunately, during this time, the heavens opened – always be prepared – and a heavy downpour meant we had to take shelter.

One important thing to bear in mind: as individual exhibits begin to close from 8.30pm, it is possible to miss out on a large section of the zoo if you are not careful.

For those focused on socialising, rather than animal-watching, food and alcohol are served in attractive open spaces, allowing guests to stop and enjoy the scenery. We spotted several delights at the World Food Market, where London’s finest vendors were serving dishes from around the globe.

On the whole, London Zoo’s relaxed and welcoming atmosphere will undoubtedly provide an enjoyable evening for friends, couples and families – just be certain to plan your route, taking special note of closing times and possible adverse weather.

By way of additional information: the Gorilla Kingdom is closed throughout Sunset Safari, to avoid disturbing five-month-old Alika, and the lions are currently residing at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, while their new enclosure is being built at the London location.
