Admiral Fallow at Oslo Hackney
The Scottish five-piece was back in London for an outstanding performance at Oslo Hackney. Sounding just as good or even better than their studio albums, Admiral Fallow’s heartfelt, passionate gig was not to be missed.
From the first song, Happened in the Fall, off their new album, the band captivated the audience with their unusual stage setup. The multitalented act had each member playing more than one instrument, and their incorporation of a flute, clarinet and synthesisers made everything all the more interesting. Much like the warm lighting illuminating the stage, the band’s comforting and lighthearted sound filled the room with a beautiful ambiance. Lead singer and guitarist Louis Abbott’s voice was soothing enough, but when pianist, flutist and background vocalist Sarah Hayes joined in with her angelic harmonies, it was goosebump-inducing.
Just like the indie-folk quintet’s songs are a melange of slow ballads and livelier tracks, while the crowd listened attentively to some songs, they danced like-nobody-is-watching to others. Holding the Strings and Guest of the Government were both very well received, as even those who didn’t know the band couldn’t help but move to the catchy beats.
The band played a great mix of old and new songs – from their classics such as Tree Bursts and Squealing Pigs to their new hits like Evangeline and Building as Foreign – and every piece was played with the utmost vitality and emotion. Their performance of Brother was definitely the highlight of the night, as the dynamic drumming, fast tempo and irresistibly catchy tune had the whole room clapping and bouncing to the beat.
While throwing in jokes here and there, keeping the crowd pumped up and leaving them unable to take their eyes of the stage, the Scottish group’s 16-song set flew by, making everybody wanting more. Admiral Fallow’s fresh sound, colourful lyrics and unique composition made for an exceptional show.
