The Correspondents at Islington Assembly Hall

Electro swing duo The Correspondents have returned to the stage, putting on a unique and adrenaline-pumped show at the Islington Assembly Hall on Friday.

Formed in 2007 in London, Ian Bruce is the lead vocalist with Chucks as main DJ and producer. Despite only having released one album in 2014 (Puppet Loosely Strung), the pair’s musical style of merging elements of hip-hop, electronica, and that ever-so-addictive drum and bass has kept loyal fans leaping at the chance to see them perform once again. The Islington Assembly Hall couldn’t have been a more suitable place for the exhilaratingly energetic performance that took place. Skirted by smoke, laser light effects and four colour-changing spotlights, Bruce and Chucks owned the stage throughout their entire performance.

Fear and Delight generated loud public appreciation with cheers of delight, but the main ingredient fueling the rocking night was the energy and absolute dedication of the singer – not only in his vocal performance but also in his highly contagious dance moves. Barely taking a breather throughout, Bruce seemed anything but nervous (despite a comment at the beginning of the set), rather a fully charged machine that never lost momentum. The duo were a fantastic combination, rendered yet more exciting by the addition of an organ player, a guitarist and a drummer.

Despite an almost nasty lighting mishap, the band maintained a smooth set, and an encore was demanded just seconds after they left the stage (though it materialised as a repeat of a previous song). The energy and effort of The Correspondents was unmatchable and a truly phenomenal scene to enjoy.
