Foxes at the Roundhouse
Grammy Award-winning Louisa Rose Allen rocked it at the Roundhouse in Camden on Friday night. The show was opened by a powerful intro, bursting with vivid visual backdrop effects and raw energy. Multicolored, strobing lights and pounding bass preceded eruptions of applause as Louisa Rose Allen, also known as Foxes, walked on stage, immediately establishing intimacy with the audience as she sang the soulful On my Way, her outstanding voice at its best. From that point, Foxes delivered mesmerizing ballads with the emotion, honesty and conviction she expresses so effectively. The band was equally excellent and inspiring, with instrumentals including piano, violin, and viola.
Foxes’ continuous interaction with and connection to the audience were strong; she frequently asked them to sing along, often provoking them all to jump, clap, and cheer to the music. At one point, Foxes revealed that her mother and grandmother were present in the crowd, dedicating All I Need to them. The lineup consisted mostly of Foxes’ slower ballads such as Sorry and Devil, which were essentially acoustic in nature, and showcased her fine voice. Songs from the artist’s debut album also had an appearance, with Glorious and Youth appearing to be favorites. Renditions of the more dynamic pop tunes Night Owls, Early Birds and Echo added an energizing fire to the performance. Amazing was the last song to be played before Foxes said goodnight and exited the stage.
Special effects were particularly outstanding for this show, with a continuous stream of flashing lights in white, green, yellow, pink, purple, and blue. Unlike some concert venues, in which the seating arrangement can provide poor viewing and sound for certain concert-goers, the relative intimacy and design of the setting provided an equal experience no matter the location. An impressive building, the Roundhouse delivered the ideal concert environment – in terms of sound and viewing, it’s unbeatable. Combining a powerful sound system with strong acoustics, the effect of Foxes’ live performance was massively exhilarating in terms of the music and enjoyment.
