Phuket’s Michelin-starred PRU wins Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its cellar and wine programme
PRU, the Michelin-starred restaurant in Phuket, Thailand, has received an Award of Excellence in Wine Spectator’s 2026 Restaurant Awards, which recognises establishments worldwide for their wine programmes.
Led by chef Jimmy Ophorst, the restaurant holds both a Michelin star and a Michelin green star (the latter awarded for sustainable practice). Its wine cellar contains around 650 labels, placing it among the larger cellars in Southeast Asia. PRU’s pairing programme is overseen by the restaurant’s sommelier and is divided into two options: The Discovery pairing, which focuses on New World wines as well as a Château Musar from Lebanon (a label favoured by Ophorst) and The Cellar Selection, which changes according to the cellar’s stock each week and concentrates on back vintages and labels from Italy and France. A non-alcoholic pairing is also available, prepared by the kitchen rather than the beverage team and following the same approach applied to the food.
Wine Spectator’s Restaurant Awards have been running since 1981 and assess wine lists submitted by restaurants around the world. The Award of Excellence is given to restaurants that present a well-chosen selection of wines, typically with a minimum number of labels, that complements the menu and reflects a coherent theme or focus. The recognition adds to the accolades PRU has accumulated over roughly a decade of operation, during which they have developed a culinary identity built around an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients – reflected in its Michelin green star.
PRU opened in 2016 during a broader shift in Phuket’s dining scene towards fine dining that draws on regional produce, and in 2024 relaunched with a brand-new look. The restaurant’s combination of a Michelin star, a green star and now a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence places it among a smaller group of establishments in Thailand to hold such a range of recognitions across both food and wine – and the first and only one in the city to reach such heights.
